Otoplasty may be performed for a variety of reasons, including:

  1.  Correction of protruding ears: The main objective of otoplasty is to correct ears that are excessively set back from the head. The aim is to create a more balanced, natural appearance.
  2. Size or shape correction : In addition to correcting the position of the ears, otoplasty can also be used to adjust the size, shape or curvature of the ears, if they have asymmetries or unusual features.
  3. Trauma repair surgery: In some cases, otoplasty can be used to repair deformities or injuries caused by accidents or trauma.
  4. Improved self-confidence: Otoplasty can help improve self-confidence and self-esteem in people who are self-conscious about the appearance of their ears and want to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Results tailored to you :

Otoplasty is a personalized procedure, tailored to your goals and unique characteristics. During your initial consultation, our specialized surgeon will evaluate your ears and discuss your aesthetic expectations. We'll then develop a detailed treatment plan to achieve results that match your vision while preserving the harmony of your face.

At what age can otoplasty be considered?

The recommended age for otoplasty, also known as protruding ear surgery, can vary depending on a number of factors. However, generally speaking, this cosmetic procedure is performed when the ears have reached a certain maturity, which usually occurs around the age of 5 to 7. At this age, the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed to allow safe and effective surgery.

Many plastic surgeons recommend waiting until the child is old enough to express his or her own desire to undergo the procedure, as this involves a personal decision about their appearance. This approach ensures that the child is involved in the decision-making process and is ready to undergo surgery.

It is essential to consult a qualified plastic surgeon to assess each patient's specific situation. The specialist can determine whether age and individual conditions are appropriate for otoplasty. A prior consultation is necessary to discuss expectations, potential risks and benefits of the procedure, as well as to obtain personalized recommendations.

In summary, otoplasty is usually considered from the age of 5 to 7, but the decision will depend on the child's physical and emotional maturity, as well as his or her own willingness to undergo surgery. A thorough discussion with an experienced plastic surgeon is necessary to make an informed decision.

How long does otoplasty last?
The length of the otoplasty procedure can vary according to the complexity of each individual case. As a general rule, otoplasty is considered a relatively quick procedure, taking on average between 1 and 2 hours.

TREATMENT

Each surgeon adopts his or her own technique, adapting it to each case to achieve the best results. However, there are some common basic principles:
The skin is peeled back as required to access the cartilage. Next, the principle is to recreate or enhance the natural reliefs (plicatures), possibly held in place by deep sutures. Plicate the upper part of the ear (the anthelix) and bury the hollow part of the ear (the concha). Remove excess skin to avoid creating a bulge. The pinna is then brought into the correct position in relation to the skull.
Absorbable sutures are traditionally used for suturing; otherwise, they must be removed around day 10.
Elastic bands are placed around the head to hold the ears in position. Otoplasty is generally performed under local anesthetic on an outpatient basis. The surgeon makes an incision in the back fold of the ear, using stitches to leave a small, totally invisible scar.

Does otoplasty hurt?

The pain associated with otoplasty can vary from person to person, but in general, the procedure is considered to have a relatively comfortable recovery period. Patients generally experience some discomfort rather than intense pain after the procedure.

During the surgery itself, you will be under local or general anaesthetic, which means you should feel no pain during the procedure.

Overall, otoplasty is considered a relatively well-tolerated procedure in terms of pain. If you have specific concerns about potential otoplasty-related pain, it's essential to discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon during the preoperative consultation. The surgeon can provide detailed information on pain management and help you make informed decisions about your procedure.

Post-treatment care :

Post-treatment care after otoplasty surgery is essential to ensure optimal healing, minimize complications and achieve the best possible results. Your plastic surgeon will provide specific instructions tailored to your individual situation, but here are some general tips on care after otoplasty:

1. Dressings and bandages :

- You will probably have a bandage or dressings around your ears after surgery. Follow your surgeon's instructions regarding their care, when they can be removed and how to change them if necessary.

2. Rest and sleeping position :

- Avoid sleeping on your sides or on your ears during the initial recovery period.

- Try to sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling.

3. Pain and discomfort :

- Take the pain medication prescribed by your surgeon as directed.

- You may feel slight discomfort or pressure around the operated area, which is normal.

4. Hygiene :

- Follow your surgeon's instructions for cleaning and maintaining the operated area.

- Avoid wetting dressings or incisions until your surgeon tells you it's safe to do so.

5. Physical activities :

- Avoid strenuous physical activity and anything that could subject your ears to excessive pressure or stress during the recovery period.

- Avoid contact sports for several weeks.

6. Nutrition and hydration :

- Eat a balanced diet and keep well hydrated to promote optimal healing.

7. Follow-up visits :

- Be sure to attend all scheduled follow-up visits with your surgeon.

- Follow-up visits allow the surgeon to monitor your recovery and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

8. Sun protection :

- Once you're allowed out, protect your ears from the sun by covering them with a hat or using sunscreen.

9. Wait for instructions before resuming certain activities:

- Wait for your surgeon to give you the green light before resuming certain activities, such as wearing glasses, strenuous exercise or scuba diving.

It is important to follow all instructions given by your plastic surgeon carefully. If you have any questions, concerns or problems during the recovery period, don't hesitate to contact them. A successful recovery depends largely on how well you take care of yourself during this critical period.

The disadvantages of otoplasty at Clinique Adonis:

Headband to be worn for 2-3 weeks.
Imperfections in the result may occur secondarily, for example as a result of unexpected tissue reactions or unusual scarring phenomena. For example, a slight asymmetry between the two ears, small irregularities in relief or a slightly too prominent fold, a narrowing of the ear or auditory canal, or a perception of the connections under the skin.
These small defects, when they exist, are usually discreet and do not attract the eye. However, they can always be retouched, usually under local anaesthetic.

RESULTS & PRICING

Result: The result of this surgical procedure is apparent the day after surgery, but is definitive after three to six months. A touch-up is sometimes necessary. It takes one to two months to appreciate the final result. This is the time needed for the tissues to soften and for all the swelling to subside, leaving the contours of the ear clearly visible. After this time, only the scars will remain slightly pink and indurated, before fading.

How much does otoplasty cost?

The cost of otoplasty varies according to a number of factors, including the complexity of the procedure and the specific needs of each patient. We attach great importance to price transparency, which is why we strongly recommend that you make an appointment for a preliminary consultation. This will enable us to discuss your goals in detail and determine the precise costs associated with your personalized otoplasty. The starting price for otoplasty is CHF 2'300.

Can I pay in instalments?

At Adonis, we understand that access to quality aesthetic care is important. That's why we offer our Swiss patients the option of monthly instalments with Swiss Billing.

Duration of results :

The results of otoplasty surgery will begin to be visible as soon as swelling and bruising begin to diminish, usually within a few weeks of surgery. However, it's important to note that full results may take some time to appear, evolving gradually over the months.

Here's what you can expect in terms of turnaround time and duration:

Initial results : The first results of your otoplasty surgery will be visible when the swelling begins to diminish, usually after a few weeks. At this point, you should begin to notice an improvement in the shape and position of your ears.

Short-term results : Results will continue to improve over the first few months following surgery. The ears will tend to settle further into their new position as the tissue heals and swelling decreases further.

Long-term results : Most patients find that the final results of otoplasty become more apparent around 6 months to 1 year after surgery. At this point, the swelling will have completely disappeared, the tissues will have healed and your ears will have reached their final position.
